the Seymour Duncan factory tour
three forum brothers and tone enthusiasts make a pilgrimage
to the Seymour Duncan factory in Santa Barbara, California

Evan explains different wire and bobbin compositions. All materials are as historically correct as possible. Can you say "butyl"?

This is a piece of history - the old Leesona winder that Seymour rescued from the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo when production ceased. This machine is used for "P.A.F." style humbuuckers, just like the old days!

for a bigger view, see this: Leesona Winder

one of two vacuum wax potting machines

how many pickups have those machines seen?

MJ brewing some pickups in the other potting machine ... she even knows how to pot a Seth!

one of the engineers shows us the D-Tar Solstice acoustic preamp .... this is a pretty versatile little unit

a shot of the main floor - it's not huge, not crowded, but efficiently organized

one thing we learned is that Seymour pays a lot of attention to small details, such as vintage-correct wood spacers in certain humbuckers, that most players will never see

maybe that's where the mojo is

in the sound room, Scott's checking out one of 3 Taylors that use the DTAR products

that's me and Scott in the sound room - Scott headed straight for a cool blackface Super Reverb. so many toys, so little time!

Thanks kindly, Evan, for the picture!

MJ, Curly

MJ strikes me in many ways as the heart and soul of the company - very warm and gracious .. thanks again!

Many thanks to our tour host, Evan Skopp, to Seymour Duncan who managed to share some time with us, to MJ, Kellie, Cathy Duncan, the upstairs crew, and the many production people who we surely imposed on.

naturally, we worked up quite an appetite on the tour, so we had to go get some good Mexican food and refreshment!

Curly, Scott_F - most likely talking about amps!   Stevo, Curly - pondering a whole new genre: "psycho-surf"!

Peace
